Bruna Ribeiro de Sousa and Nuno Igreja Matos sign articles in ‘Freedom of the Press in Portugal and Europe’
Bruna Ribeiro de Sousa writes the article 'Sampaio e Paiva de Melo v. Portugal - Freedom of expression as a (tendentially) absolute right and the (illusory) margin of appreciation of the States Parties', which deals with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights of 23 July 2013.
Nuno Igreja Matos co-authored with Helena Morão 'Anatomy of a "ri-me": the case of Patrício Monteiro Telo de Abreu v. Portugal', which deals with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Patrício Monteiro Telo de Abreu v. Portugal. Portugal', which deals with the Court's judgment of 6 June 2022 and deals with the criminal limits of the expression of humour.
The book 'Freedom of the Press in Portugal and Europe' aims to discuss freedom of the press in Portugal and Europe in the light of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. The judgments chosen are those relating to cases brought by Portuguese individuals and legal entities, as well as some judgments relating to other emblematic cases. The judgments selected are commented on by journalists, legal practitioners and academics. In this way, the book aims to reconcile a practical vision with a theoretical reflection on the foundations, scope and limits of press freedom, taking into account the challenges faced by journalists and the media in general today.
The book will be presented at the Assembly of the Library of the Republic on 17 December.
