Commercial arbitration enters the digital era with new platforms promising greater efficiency, security, and centralized information management. Filipe Vaz Pinto comments on these changes to ADVOCATUS, highlighting the impact of technology on dispute resolution.
Filipe Vaz Pinto, partner at Morais Leitão and head of the Arbitration practice, believes that the new digital platforms in commercial arbitration are ‘very welcome’, as they make it possible to reduce administrative acts, centralise and standardise information, as well as reinforcing security in data processing. The lawyer comments that this innovation could bring efficiency gains to the sector, as long as it is adapted to the needs of each Arbitration Centre.
For Filipe Vaz Pinto, Arbitration Centres play an essential role in the integrity of arbitration proceedings, ensuring not only good practice, but also promoting arbitration as an effective means of resolving disputes, both in terms of time and costs.
Despite the advantages of the new digital platform announced by the Commercial Arbitration Institute (IAC), the lawyer recalls that commercial arbitration is already essentially dematerialised, currently operating via email. However, he recognises that more advanced technological solutions can make the process even more efficient. ‘As with all processes of technological change, it will be necessary to ‘provoke’ the necessary changes in the behaviour of those involved,’ he says.
