Inês Ventura Salazar, senior associate, and Catarina de Sousa Ribeiro, trainee lawyer, wrote the article "The Growth of the Build-to-Rent Model in Portugal: An Alternative in the Residential Property Market", published by Vida Imobiliária magazine.

For the authors, the "build-to-rent" model "has assumed significant popularity in several countries (in Europe and beyond)" and "is gradually establishing itself as a viable alternative for housing, offering an alternative to the classic rental market."

"Despite the potential, there are challenges to be overcome for build-to-rent projects to become fully established in Portugal - not least the tax burden that a private property investment entails for an investor in Portugal, starting with the 23% VAT on new construction."
