On November 18, 2011, Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva hosted a Lex Mundi Bank Finance and Regulation Practice Group Meeting, which currently is presided by Filipe Lowndes Marques.
The firm received 17 lawyers coming from 16 countries (United States of America, Canada, Germany, France, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Denmark, Hungary, Switzerland and Romania). Eleven home lawyers joined these foreign lawyers.
In addition to the discussion and decisions concerning the practice group and its activity, three conferences sessions took place with the following topics and speakers:
Session I – Tendencies of Banking Regulation
Pedro Duarte Neves, Vice Governor of the Bank of Portugal, exposed the tendencies of banking regulation in Europe, as well as all over the world, drawing attention to the rules imposed by the Basel III Accord, new proposals for the reforms on regulation and the direct intervention of governments into the banking sector.
Session II – PPPs and Project Finance
In this session moderated by Luís Branco, Andreas Crede from the European PPP Expertise Centre of the European Investment Bank, shared his experience in the innovative financing of a prison in the United Kingdom.
Francisco Soares, consultant of Parpública and Administrator of PT, and Gonçalo Moura Martins, President of the Board of Directors of our Client Ascendi Group, shared their opinions on the present and future public-private partnerships and finance projects and the impact that the actual financial crisis may have on them.
Session III – Financial Crisis in Europe and Global Economy
In the afternoon session António Nogueira Leite, Executive Vice President of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, exhibited a presentation on the international economic and financial panorama and Paulo Leiria, Chief Economist at Esame (organisation responsible for the execution report of the Financial Assistance Program) spoke specially on the national panorama and the program of BCE, the European Commission and the IMF.
During this session moderated by António Lobo Xavier, the speakers also shared their personal opinions on future perspectives.
