Manuel Bragança Santos and Catarina de Sousa Ribeiro co-author an article about Data Centers

In the article "Data Centres - Renting Vs. Building", published in Vida Imobiliária magazine, Manuel Bragança Santos, an associate in the corporate real estate and tourism practice, and Catarina de Sousa Ribeiro, a trainee lawyer in the litigation and arbitration team, discuss the crucial decision companies face when deciding whether to lease or build their own data centre.

The lawyers point out that building offers control over the customisation and specialisation of IT equipment, avoids the risk of losing the lease and makes it possible to rent unused space.

However, the authors warn of the high initial and ongoing costs involved in building and maintaining a Data Centre. Energy, personnel, IT infrastructure and "real estate" costs are mentioned, as well as future uncertainties and space problems. The importance of carefully analysing the costs and benefits of each option is highlighted, suggesting that leasing may be the best solution for many companies, offering flexibility and scalability without the high initial costs of building and implementing a Data Centre.
