Prison Insights’ 3rd Edition: APAC and Instituto Miguel Galvão Teles come together again for a 100% digital edition
The 3rd edition of Prison Insights starts on the 29th April and runs until the 27th May. The event, prepared in partnership between APAC Portugal and Instituto Miguel Galvão Teles (IMGT), brings together national and international speakers for a networking moment for the sharing of knowledge, experiences and innovative solutions on issues related to the prison system, in Portugal and worldwide.
The 2021 edition, which will take place entirely online, focuses on the theme "Building Houses, Breaking Walls". In its five sessions, the speakers will seek to challenge the traditional concept of prison - as we have known it for years - and explore a new detention solution, which been proven to be more efficient and humane: the detention houses.
The speaker’s panel is composed by Baz Dreisinger, founder of Incarceration Nations Network; Éric de Villeroché, co-president of La Ferme de Moyembrie; Michael Murphy, founder and CEO of MASS Design Group; Jan van Gils, director of Exodus Nederland; and Greg Boyle, founder of Homebody Industries.
For Rui Patrício, partner at ML and co-coordinator of the IMGT, "a modern criminal law only makes sense if it is oriented for two main purposes, one of them being the re-socialisation of the convicted person. And this depends on a set of elements and variables that require attention, investment and continuous improvement, not only by the main actors in the system, but also by the whole society which should be mobilized think, discuss the problems and alternatives. Not only that, but also act on it. And for all this, this initiative wants, once again, to mobilise and it is our (social and human) responsibility to try to contribute as much as possible.”
For João Gouveia, president of APAC Portugal "it is urgent to rethink a concept of prison that was conceived more than 200 years ago and whose stagnation in time is flagrant, especially when compared with the exponential and technological evolution of other social systems. What should the deprivation of liberty look like in the 21st century? Certainly, there will be a detention solution that is more effective in the reinsertion of prisoners. This reinsertion is the way to create safer and more inclusive societies. It is the only way to create a sustainable prison system.”
